Our First Week!

We made it through a week of first grade! What a wonderful class! I am so blessed to share my days with your children!

This week we focused on classroom rules and procedures. We read, The Day a Monster Came to School and No David at School. Through these stories, we discussed which behaviors are acceptable in the school and which are not.  We did a class sort following each book as well as a writing activity.

We also read, Just a Little Bit, and focused on building friendships.  We read a short book about friendship and each child shared one way they are a good friend.

In language arts we reviewed our kinder letters, sounds, and sight words. We also kicked off our reader's workshop. This is a big deal! We practiced how to read a book three ways, while building our stamina. We met every goal we set for ourselves and cheered as we unlocked new learning privileges in our classroom.

For math we are focused on numeracy. We are beginning our discovery about number relationships. I took some teacher notes as the students showed me their knowledge base with numbers and number concepts. Then we began our math workshop when students work independently in small groups. This time allows me to see how they work both socially and academically. Math workshop is hands on math. It is directly related to our math TEKS for the state of Texas but broken down into concrete, hands on activities for our students. Our math workshop tubs reflect the skills that the students are learning in previous weeks. This time allows me to work with individual students or small groups.

I put together a smilebox for you to watch with your child of our first week.  Hopefully this will generate some discussion about what we did our first week!
